This wine is a big departure from the 2000 Shifflett I enjoyed so much, which was 100% cabernet sauvignon. The 2001 is a blend of 53% cab, 26% cab franc and 21% merlot. You can tell the difference -- the '01 is a lighter wine. That said, it seems to have improved a lot since the last time I tried it a couple of months ago. I get dark plums and stewed fruit on the nose, and bright cherries and smoked meat on the palate. The finish is short and lacks the complexity of the 2000. It's not as exciting as its older brother, but I see potential in this wine. I have almost a case left, so I'm going to wait a little bit before opening my next bottle to give it time to find itself.

I have enjoyed Neal Shifflett 1997. What are the thoughts about the 2001 Shifflett???? Will it stay cellared for 10 to 15 years? Thanks

Hi Sam,
No, the '01 is made for near-term drinking -- I'd say no more than 5 years, 7 tops. I'll probably finish mine off in the next 3 years.
